January 2026 is here, and with it comes that familiar pressure to start again.
New year, new goals, new resolutions.

Yet for many people, New Year’s resolutions don’t last beyond a few weeks — and that’s not because we lack willpower or motivation. It’s often because life is more complex than a checklist of intentions.

Why New Year’s Resolutions Often Don’t Work

Resolutions tend to focus on what we want to change, not why change feels difficult in the first place. They can overlook the internal landscape we’re working with — our emotional resources, past experiences, fears, and even the parts of us that are simply trying to stay safe.

When life gets busy, stressful, or unpredictable, our personal resources may feel stretched thin. Old wounds or unresolved hurt can quietly resurface, influencing how confident, capable, or motivated we feel. Sometimes staying where we are feels safer than stepping into the unknown — even when we truly want change.

And for many people, there’s also a fear of failure:

  • What if I try and it doesn’t work?

  • What if I prove to myself that I can’t do it?

So instead of moving forward, we pause. Or we stay stuck.
